CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is one of the main treatment methods your chiropractor will use to get your spine moving correctly. It takes five years of university training and years of clinical experience to perform an effective spinal adjustment.
What is the popping sound?
Inside your joints you have fluid and gas. The fluid is called synovial fluid and is the lubricant for your joints. The actual ‘pop’ sound you hear during a chiropractic adjustment is the gas escaping the joint.
Who needs to see a chiropractor?
Chiropractic treatments are effective for people suffering from back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, pinched nerves and slipped discs, as well as many other musculoskeletal conditions. Some of the common occupational hazards that may result in the above conditions are repetitive lifting and twisting, sudden unexpected movements or prolonged sitting. Some patients come to the clinic with minimal pain but generally feel very stiff and tight or notice they have bad posture.
Why do we get pain?
One of the main reasons we get back pain is due to our lifestyles. We tend to sit for too long without taking regular breaks. This puts significantly more strain on our spine than when we are upright and moving. When joints get very tight, they can start to grind instead of slide. We have pain receptors on our joint surface that send a signal via our spinal cord to our brain which interprets this as pain. When muscles guard the spine for a long time they become irritable, painful and weak.
Does an adjustment hurt?
In most cases a chiropractic adjustment doesn’t hurt. A chiropractic adjustment only moves the joint within its normal range of movement, with specific pressure applied to get the vertebrae moving correctly. When joints and muscles are very inflamed it can be uncomfortable but the chiropractor will always do their best to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.
